Welcome to FP&M SETA
Message from the CEO
The FP&M SETA was established by the Honourable Minister of Higher Education on April 1, 2011, following the government’s strategic decision to cluster sectors and strengthen value-chain linkages between related industries.
Our SETA encompasses a diverse range of sub-sectors, including clothing, footwear, forestry, furniture, general goods, leather, packaging, print media, printing, publishing, pulp and paper, textiles, and wood products. These sub-sectors, while distinct, are intricately interconnected, collectively adding immense value to consumers’ lives.
By transforming raw materials such as lumber, pulp, natural and synthetic fibers, and animal skins/hides into finished products, we produce essential items like furniture, clothing, shoes, protective equipment, paper and paperboard, printed materials (books, magazines, etc.), and industrial fabrics. Our sector also extends into high-tech applications across numerous industries, including automotive, healthcare, and construction.
As we embrace the advancements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and look ahead to the Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR), our sector is evolving rapidly. Innovations in automation, artificial intelligence, and digitalization are driving efficiency and sustainability, while human-centric approaches are enhancing the quality and customization of our products. It is nearly impossible to go through a day without using one or more products manufactured within the FP&M sector.

Kabelo Mogashou
In 2023, I embarked on the learnership programme, and the first day posed significant challenges. My knowledge was limited to theory, but the patient instructors and resilient workers helped me navigate the complexities. Each coach had their unique training strategy, which I embraced wholeheartedly in my pursuit of excellence. Recently, I received an opportunity to join Aranda as a contract worker – an achievement that validates my hard work and boosts my confidence. I extend eternal gratitude to FP&M SETA for granting me this life-changing opportunity.

Duncan Harper
After seven years working as an unqualified turner at companies that consistently overpromised, Duncan Harper applied for an apprenticeship through Sappi Saiccor. With the support of Sappi and FP&M SETA, he embarked on a four-year journey to become a qualified Fitter and Turner. Despite initial challenges, Duncan persevered, benefiting from exceptional training and mentorship. Today, he is a Red Sealqualified Fitter and Turner, holding a position as a Mechanical Fitter and Rotable Controller at Sappi Saiccor. Duncan’s story is a testament to the opportunities provided by Sappi and FP&M SETA.

Ndumiso Mtshali
Ndumiso joined our learnership with no prior experience, but his eagerness to learn and unwavering determination were remarkable. He dedicated himself to mastering the entire garment creation process, growing from a complete novice into a proficient professional. We were so impressed by his talent and contributions that we offered him a permanent position. His journey is a powerful testament to the impact of accessible, inclusive training.
